Delve into the delicious world of South African baking

With the guidance of our expert baker, you’ll get the chance to practise creating both sweet pastry and savoury dough, as well as the key bread baking skills of kneading, proving and shaping to make a sweet Melktert (custard tart) and a savoury Vetkoek (fat cake, trust us they’re delicious).

First, you’ll prepare the sweet pastry and fill it with a tasty homemade vanilla and cinnamon custard, creating your Melktert. Next, you will make a yeasted savoury dough which will be fried rather than baked, and fill it with a blend of mincemeat and diced onion, carrot and potato, packed with herbs and spices.

By the end you’ll have a sweet and savoury South African menu to enjoy with friends and family!

During the live workshop we will make: VETKOEK (with beef mince filling) & MELKTERT (custard tart).

The workshop requires some preparation of ingredients and pastry prior to the event, there’s a small amount of pastry to prepare at least one hour before the workshop, or up to two days in advance.

The workshop will last approximately 2-2.5 hours.
